Out of Mini-Marshmallows!

as a Hands-On History Project for Kids
Watch our video below on how to make an Ancient Egyptian mini-marshmallow pyramid ! For additional helpful info from Carol Henderson, read below the video!
How to Make an Egyptian Pyramid from Marshmallows:
The Base: You’ll need a disposable plate or a small styrofoam meat tray to hold your project.
If you are doing this project with a class, have them write their names on the bottom of this base before you begin.
The Marshmallows: I estimate that a typical 10.5 ounce bag of mini marshmallows will make about 5 pyramids. Of course, you should probably buy an extra bag to allow for all the eating that can’t help but happen while making this project!
The Icing: I found that one recipe of watered-down buttercream icing was plenty for all my 22 students. This is how I made it:
1/2 c. shortening (margarine is OK…it just gives it a yellowish tinge)
4 c. powdered sugar (1 box)
about 1/2 c. (or so) milk or cream — I didn’t accurately measure how much I used. I just kept adding a little at a time until the icing was the consistency of gravyWhip all this together until smooth. Keep in airtight container in the fridge. Let warm to room temperature before using.
Other Supplies: You’ll just need plastic spoons to spread the icing on the paper plate (using the back of the spoon).
Of course, if you choose to make your pyramid non-edible, you can use glue instead of icing.
The Technique: Watch the video (above)!! It’s pretty simple!
Top It In Gold: Be sure to tell your kid(s) that since the original pyramids were polished limestone, they gleamed a brilliant white in ancient times just like the models they’re making. What’s more, it is believed that the very top was covered in gold. A nice touch for your project is to use gold or yellow sprinkles for the top marshmallow.
